We Are Saddened To Announce The Passing Of Bill Riley NHL Amherst

With heartfelt sadness and deep respect, we honor the life of Bill Riley, a gifted ice hockey player and true pioneer whose legacy extends far beyond the rink. Passing away at the age of 75 after a courageous battle with cancer, Bill leaves behind a story of perseverance, excellence, and lasting impact.

Bill made history as one of the earliest Black players in the NHL, becoming the third to compete in the league. His journey to professional hockey was both a personal achievement and a milestone for the sport, breaking barriers and inspiring future generations. He skated with determination and pride, playing four seasons with the Washington Capitals before concluding his NHL career with the Winnipeg Jets, earning respect for his skill, grit, and dedication.

 

Beyond his accomplishments on the ice, Bill was a man of character and warmth. In his hometown of Amherst, Nova Scotia, he was beloved not only as an athlete but as a friend, mentor, and community figure.
